Officer Buckle and Gloria activities that are printable and digital! Students respond to the story in writing and complete math & literacy tasks.
The book, Officer Buckle and Gloria, by Peggy Rathmann, is a great read-aloud for kindergarten and first grade. Gloria, the police dog, is quite the character and will definitely give your kiddos a laugh! Here is a read-aloud on YouTube if you’re unfamiliar with the story:
The set of Officer Buckle and Gloria activities is broken up into 3 parts: responding to literature, math activities, & literacy activities. All of the tasks are available in a print format and also digital. The activities are preloaded to Seesaw and available in PowerPoint so you can easily upload to Google Classroom or another digital platform.
There are four responding to literature activities. Throughout the week, your kindergarten or first grade students will complete activities that support making inferences, story retell, problem & solution, and constructing an idea. The printables have a QR code that connects students with a read-aloud of the story on YouTube. They also have a code to scan so they can listen to the directions for each activity.
On day 1, students practice their inferring skills.
This activity would be a great option for interactive writing. It is important to model good writing and mechanics during this time. You can model and have students help you construct a written response.
It is time to retell the story! Using the images, students put the events of the story in order. Then, they can practice retelling the story to a partner.
On day 3, students are ready to come up with their own safety tips! Seriously, you need to look at these… the illustrations are SO CUTE!
The final activity for responding to literature is identifying the problem and solution. This is a great skill to practice in both kindergarten and 1st grade.
In addition to the writing activities, there are 3 literacy activities. The activities are different for kindergarten and first grade, but you get both versions! That is a total of 6 literacy tasks. This makes it easy to differentiate within your classroom! Plus, remember the activities are available in a digital format, too!
Just like the literacy activities, you will find 3 math activities for both kindergarten and first grade.
